My SO students had their first flying session today. They trimmed for best cruise, as
recommended last year by Bill Gowen. Then they wound to max and backed off, going for a
flight just short of the ceiling beams. The better of the two planes was a bit overweight, 8.1
grams, and did a best flight of 2:31, no touch, under a 19 ft. ceiling.
On thing that was perplexing, was that the plane turned in a very wide circle at first, using up
more than the width of a basketball court for the first half turn. After that, the circle was
only about 2/3 as large for the rest of the flight.
We're previously had some planes that would turn tighter in the beginning, but any ideas why
the circle is wider right after launch? They are using a combination of left thrust, left rudder,
and stab tilt - is one of these less effective when the plane is flying faster?
