I just added some pictures to to the tools and jigs album of a direct
reading balance (not a beam balance) that I have used for several
years before purchasing an electronic balance. The original idea came
from an old plan publshed in Model Airplane News in the 60's.
Graduations for each 10 mg are spaced approximately 0.1 inches apart.
I can guesstimate to within 2 mg. (compared to weight on an acculab V-
1mg balance.) I like this type of balance because of absence of a
slider weight. Weighing is quick and simple. Smaller lighter versions
can be built with a range of 0 to 10 mg to weigh individual ribs. If
you have the resources to purchase an electronic balance do so but
they are not necessary for accurate building and record
