"On my "butt first' SO canard, I've set it
up for a right hand circle, reasoning that if a left circle is good
with the wing in front, a right should be good for the canard. Any
thoughts ?"

wombat,

Sounds reasonable. That's how we fly them. Understand that someone holds
the prop while someone else winds from the other end, clockwise. That means
the prop turns in the opposite direction and it is a left handed prop. In
that case, the motor torque rolls the plane right and it will fly in a right
circle under power. As the power winds down you may need something else to keep
the right turn.
