A quick explanation:
VD means variable diameter. VP means variable pitch. Both are methods of slowing prop RPM's and the model's climb rate during the high power part of the flight. Without one or the other of these methods it's generally necessary to launch with less than the maximum number of turns in a motor. Some competition classes prohibit the use of such devices. In those classes flaring props are used to get a VP effect without the mechanism. In very high ceiling sites it's not usually necessary or desirable to use VD or VP or flaring props because you want the model to climb as high as possible.
