Yes, it's the hinges that fatigue, especially monokote or similar
hinges. In theory it might seem like the spring would take a set but I
haven't seen any evidence to support that. As long as both ends of the
spring rest on something other than balsa, like a nylon screw or
against a metal yoke, not much seems to change. A long time ago,
before nylon screws, when we allowed the forward leg of the spring
(which now rests on the preload screw)to rest against a wooden wedge
or directly against the balsa spar we did see compression of the balsa.
