5 to 6 pound balsa should be fine for this model. I would try to pick the lightest wood for the stab and the tailboom. The rest isn't that important. Most of my models are fine with a more rearward CG, but Bernie's program says that this one flies the best with the CG at the plan location. Just out of curiosity I ran the numbers again with a 1 gram wing and a 1/2 gram stab and there was only a tiny bit of performance loss. Moving the wing to get the CG back to the right location relative to the wing brought the performance almost equal to the original design.

NOTE TO ALL:
The CG location on the plan is with a 2 gram motor attached! Without the motor the CG should be about 3/4" in front of the TE. I'm going to modify the plan to make this clear and also change the sizes of a few members.

Morning, Bill, sounds like you have a winner (;-')

My class will start building next week, gonna have 4 teams of 2, I think
we'll do rolled tubes on 2, straight stick on the other 2
  . Best balsa I've got is 5 / 6 lb, we'll be using a 6% simplex 'foil
warped from 2 lamina of 1/32.

  See what happens

Tried to fly mine in gym again, cruising near the ceiling, went under
the air vent and was blown almost to the floor, gotta find a better place.
