Hey guys,

A week ago I built a canard model to the 2007 SO rules for the heck of
it. There was an indoor flying session (mostly RC) in the neighboring
town, and I hadn't built or flown anything in over a year, so I
decided to throw something together. I posted a couple pictures of it
in the photos section under SO. Nothing spectacular in terms of
performance, it did about 2 minutes right out of the box in the 25 ft
site. It was built to about 5.25g and ballasted to 7g. Trimming the
canard proved a little more touchy than a conventional plane. The CG
was probably a bit farther forward than is ideal (about an inch and a
half ahead of the front wing post, I think somewhere around the front
wing post should be about right). It looked great most of the time,
but if it either hit anything or was coming down towards the end of
the flight it would get into a weird oscillation where the canard
would stall and the plane would dip in, really tightening up the
circle and ruining the cruise. Propeller pitch and rubber also weren't
dialed in at all, just stock pitch and flying on about 80 thou super
sport, a little to thick. I didn't have much time to play with the
thrustline, wing offset and stabilizer tilt, all of which I'm guessing
will be pretty important tweaking the most performance out of it. If I
built another one I would probably decrease the wing sweep a little
and use a stiffer motorstick.
