Jeff
I agree that we should go ahead and do this. Hopefully we'll get some ideas from others about the nuts and bolts part. I was thinking about having ratings for each one of several popular classes - like LPP, F1L, A6, EZB, and whatever else. This might get to be too much information. Can some other group members come up with some ideas?

Since most of us and for sure most beginners do most of our flying in Cat 1 or Cat 2 sites I think a weighted system like used in the postals is a good idea.

I really like this idea also... I like the idea of maybe a decal or
patch (of which the decals really shouldn't be costly in today's
online service world...) and also a ongoing list (which I'd be happy
to put on my site) of achievements... Maybe the best thing to do is
just start something up first, and then if the NFFS or other orgs want
to run with it, fine... but I think the "indoor" guys can make
something up without having to go thru all the red tape...

What are some ideas for classes/times/levels...? I like John's
proposal, maybe with 3 levels and a "master" level... the three
bottom levels could be the same design, with a different color coding,
and the master level something with a bit more decoration... I'll
look into graphics/decals for the classes, and maybe post a few ideas...

Let's take a class like F1L, and see some proposals for the
levels/times... I'll start it with something like this... (not
proposing any class names at this point... not that inventive...)

  (assuming a Cat IV site...)
  Level 1 - 5 min
  Level 2 - 10 min
  Level 3 - 15 min
  Master - 20 min

The above would probably have to be adjusted with a formula for
ceiling height, like I was using in my postals... Don knows the
formulas much better than I do, and I'm sure that they can be
tweaked... We could even do it something like I did in the postals,
and have everything automatically calculated and posted on a results
  site...

The more I think about this, the more I like the idea... I also think
that we (those of us that think it is a good idea...) should just make
it happen, and go from there...

Maybe NFFS could pick up on this. The awards would not have to be
costly. In fact it might be nothing more than having your name put on
a list. It would give new fliers something to work towards where they
wouldn't have to beat the "experts". Also maybe there could be an
achievement ladder for several different common events.
