Thanks for the ?solutions?, guys. I have a homemade idea drying at this
very moment. Wetting balsa after manhandling has always been a
solution - or, last ditch effort for salvage - to regenerate cell
structure. I'll report the results shortly.

Kurt, you are probably correct. In a forgetful moment, I used an
aluminum sanding bar at the end of the process; and, I am a bit scotch
with my sandpaper. Regarding backing, I have also found rigid foam
insulation to be a great material. Stiff foam packing sheets work, too.
